Fourth International Scientific Workshop on Argentine Shortfin Squid Concludes in Spain, Agrees to Establish Regional Database but Argentina Does Not Participate
The Fourth International Scientific Workshop on Argentine Shortfin Squid was held in Vigo, Spain, from September 30 to October 2, and the meeting agreed to advance a regional fisheries and biological information database for the Southwest Atlantic, with Uruguay's DINARA agreeing to host the database, but Argentina and its INIDEP did not participate in the meeting.
The Fourth International Scientific Workshop on Argentine shortfin squid (Illex argentinus) was held in Vigo, Spain, from September 30 to October 2, and the meeting agreed to advance the establishment of a regional fisheries and biological information database for the Southwest Atlantic.
According to Argentine fisheries information agency Pescare, Uruguay's National Directorate of Aquatic Resources (DINARA) has agreed to host the database, and its implementation still requires government approval. The database aims to bring together data from different fleets to assess the abundance, productivity and exploitation status of this squid resource.
The report noted that Argentina and the Argentine National Institute of Fisheries Research and Development (INIDEP) did not participate in the meeting. This absence involves the coastal state of the resource—the country has one of the main fisheries for this resource—as well as its scientific research institution.
The information was released by Pescare on October 7, 2026.
