Icelandic Arctic char farmer Matorka's assets acquired in their entirety by Brim after bankruptcy
On the same day Icelandic farming company Matorka filed for bankruptcy at the Reykjanes District Court, all of its assets were acquired by fisheries and seafood group Brim through a newly established subsidiary, with all employees retained; the transaction is still pending approval by Iceland's competition authorities.
On the same day Icelandic farming company Matorka filed for bankruptcy at the Reykjanes District Court (tingretten i Reykjanes), all of its assets were acquired by Icelandic fisheries and seafood group Brim. Brim announced on 6 October 2026 that it had bought all the assets in Matorka's bankruptcy estate through a newly established subsidiary. Icelandic newspaper Morgunbladid was first to report the acquisition.
Matorka is a company that has focused on Arctic char (røye) farming for many years. In its announcement, Brim said the acquisition is intended to further develop Matorka's existing operations and expertise, with a focus on cost-effective operations, product quality and sustainable growth in the years ahead.
Brim said the acquisition allows it to draw on the group's knowledge and experience in food production, marketing and international sales. The new owner company expects production to exceed 1,000 tonnes of whole Arctic char next year.
Matorka had previously carried debt and encountered operational difficulties following a series of earthquakes in the Grindavik area.
Matorka's bankruptcy administrator confirmed to Intrafish that employees have been informed of the change of ownership and that all employees will keep their jobs under the new ownership.
The acquisition is still subject to approval by Iceland's competition authorities.
