Global Squid Supply, Demand and Trade Landscape Report (2026)

In week 15, the distant-water squid market at the Zhejiang Agricultural Center continued its weak trend, with a very clear market mainline: supply from the Southeast Pacific continued to be released and prices continued to fall; off-line products from the Southwest Atlantic were generally stable; and quotes from the Northwest Pacific and Indian Ocean remained unchanged. The attachment shows that prices for the three major squid products from the Southeast Pacific edged down slightly, whole-tube products came under pressure and fluctuated, and tube prices fell more noticeably, becoming the most prominent change on the price side this week.

This round of decline first came from an increase on the supply side. As of April 9, cumulative landings of jumbo flying squid (茎柔鱼, Dosidicus gigas) in Peru had reached 215,473.31 tonnes, completing 70.55% of the January-to-June quota, with resource conditions and operating efficiency both at relatively high levels, driving continued release of output. High seas operations also performed decently, with average daily output per vessel of about 5 to 8 tonnes last week, and average catch per vessel of about 450 to 500 tonnes since December 2025. With supply continuing to increase, combined with imported catches that arrived in concentrated volumes earlier, inventory pressure has risen noticeably, while the spot market's absorption capacity has not kept pace.

The demand-side response has been rather cold. The attachment notes that downstream purchasing has been cautious, with a relatively strong wait-and-see sentiment; online transaction volume for Southeast Pacific squid was 1,016 tonnes, indicating that the market is not without trades, but that buyers prefer to replenish as needed, are unwilling to chase highs, and are in no hurry to expand inventories. Such a purchasing pace directly suppressed price elasticity, making it difficult for the market to form effective support after supply increased. The Weihai International Marine Commodity Trading Center also gave a pullback signal, with prices for Peruvian equatorial squid falling to varying degrees across specifications, indicating that the weakness is not a phenomenon of a single platform.

Compared with the Southeast Pacific, Southwest Atlantic squid performed relatively steadily. In week 15, the composite quote for Southwest Atlantic squid (off-line) at the Zhejiang Agricultural Center was basically flat compared with the previous week, with online transactions of 156 tonnes. Prices did not loosen noticeably, and the core reason is that the current supply-demand match in this region is still better than in the Southeast Pacific. On the Argentine side, fishing has already opened in waters north of 44 degrees south latitude, and the northbound fleet obtained S, M and L specifications of squid, with catch per vessel reaching 32 tonnes; resources in the southern waters also performed relatively well, showing that the resource base this season is not bad. High seas operations were relatively ordinary, with average daily output per vessel of about 1 to 2 tonnes last week, and cumulative average catch per vessel so far this season of about 150 tonnes. Precisely because of this, the Argentine squid market has not seen the kind of concentrated downward pressure seen in Peruvian goods, but prices in the Weihai market have already edged down slightly, indicating that the foundation for price stability is also being tested by the increase in new arrivals.

Other production areas currently play more of a "stabilizing" role. The composite quote for Northwest Pacific squid this week was flat compared with the previous week, and quotes for Indian Ocean squid were also unchanged. Stable prices in the two major production areas provide a certain buffer for the overall market, but are not enough to change the reality of a downward shift in the market's center of gravity. Data from the Zhoushan port also convey a cautious signal: in week 15, the volume of distant-water self-caught squid entering customs decreased week on week compared with the previous week, which means that although the short-term arrival pace has fluctuated, market inventory pressure has not truly been relieved, and traders are still digesting earlier supply.

Judging from the trend in week 15, the most critical variable in the current squid market is still the Southeast Pacific. Peru's continued high output, concentrated arrivals of imported catches, and slower downstream purchasing—these three factors combined have already pulled the price center of gravity downward. Argentine squid can still maintain relative stability for the time being, and there are no obvious fluctuations in the Northwest Pacific and Indian Ocean, but with mainstream supply overall loose, it is difficult for the market to buck the trend on its own. For domestic processing plants and traders, the more realistic strategy at this stage is not to bet on a rebound, but to control the purchasing pace and keep a close eye on inventory turnover and specification structure, especially being alert to the chain reaction of continued low-priced Southeast Pacific goods hitting the market.
