In week 18 of 2026 (April 27 to May 2), salmon wholesale prices in the Chinese market weakened slightly, but with the May Day holiday approaching, the industry widely expects pre-holiday purchasing to drive demand back up.
In the Guangzhou market, the wholesale price of head-off, gutted Norwegian Atlantic salmon (大西洋鲑) in the 6-7 kg size fell by 3 yuan/kg compared with the previous week. According to the report, the Norwegian fish sold on the market on April 27 mostly had production dates before April 23, and the pace of spot circulation had not yet fully switched to pre-holiday stockpiling mode.
A Shanghai importer told the media that the day's price was of limited reference value, because end consumption was still "saving up to spend during the holiday," and the real purchasing activity was expected to come out in the latter half of this week, with prices likely to move upward, though it was still hard to judge exactly how much they could rise. In other words, the current decline looks more like a brief pullback before the holiday, not a sudden weakening of demand.
Behind this, a very direct background is holiday consumption. China's Labor Day holiday this year runs from May 1 to 5, and catering, retail, and gift-giving demand usually all release in a concentrated way before the holiday. For importers, the pace of shipments and replenishment orders during these few days is more worth watching than the single-day price on the Monday market.
According to foreign media UCN, at the Seafood Expo Global held in Barcelona, Spain, last week, Sigmund Bjorgo, head of the Norwegian Seafood Council's China office, said China is expected to surpass France and Germany to become the world's second-largest salmon market. He mentioned that in January and February this year, the Chinese market continued to grow, with fresh whole fish increasing by 59%. However, in terms of market share, Norwegian salmon currently accounts for only 56% of the Chinese market.
At the same time, Norwegian origin spot prices rebounded in week 18 after five consecutive weeks of decline. UCN said that after polling several industry insiders on April 24, it judged that the FCA Oslo quote for Norwegian salmon in the mainstream 3-6 kg size had risen by 11.1%. That is to say, just as the Chinese wholesale side had slightly declined, Norwegian origin prices had already begun to move upward, and traders should be watching to see how the domestic market will move in the few days before the holiday.
