The Norwegian king crab market saw an unusual run this week: supply came in, but prices did not loosen—instead they kept pushing higher. The latest market information shows that in week 15 of 2026 (April 6-12), landings of Norwegian live female king crab in the 0.8-1.6 kg size rose to 12,118 kg, a sharp increase from 7,104 kg the previous week, refreshing the seasonal high for this period; the average price for this size rose to NOK 117.97 per kg over the same period, the highest level so far this year.
This round of increased volume was mainly concentrated in female crab. Since week 13, landings of live female crab in the 0.8-1.6 kg size have expanded more than 4-fold, and the seasonal shift that began to appear in March is accelerating, with the market's main supply gradually shifting from male crab to female crab. In the current auction structure, female crab in the 0.8-1.6 kg size has far outpaced other sizes and become the absolute dominant category.
More critical is the price performance. The market was still relatively stable the previous week, but female crab prices continued to rise in week 15, indicating that the auction side still has the capacity to absorb the additional supply. Year on year, the price for this size is only NOK 0.95 higher than the same period last year, an increase of about 1%, but compared with the start of the year, the cumulative increase has already approached NOK 16. For buyers, the most uncomfortable thing right now is not short-term fluctuation, but the fact that high prices are slow to come back down.
Male crab also saw an increase, but the trend was not as strong as female crab. In week 15, combined landings of the two male crab sizes reached 2,265 kg, higher than 1,393 kg the previous week, while the same period last year was only 712 kg. The price of live male crab above 3.2 kg rose 16% week on week, with landings edging up to 2 tonnes, and the current price is 7% higher than the same period last year. Landings of male crab in the 2.2-3.2 kg size increased to 2,000 kg, with the price basically flat week on week, but still about NOK 80 higher year on year, indicating that medium-sized male crab remains in a high-price range.
The other female crab size has not yet formed an effective reference. There was no new data for live female crab in the 1.6-2.2 kg size in week 15, and only 1 kg was traded in week 14; the sample is too thin, and the price reading has no real representativeness. At this stage, what the market is really watching is still the mainstream female crab in the 0.8-1.6 kg size.
Across the entire crab market, Norwegian red king crab remains one of the few species holding firm. Supply is concentrated in the Arctic and Atlantic waters, and the regional supply structure is relatively closed, with external disruptions not throwing prices into disarray. U.S. wholesale quotes for all sizes also showed no obvious changes this week, and the overall market presents a state of "not much supply, and prices not loosening." Red king crab supply is relatively tight, while snow crab is relatively more abundant, and this difference is continuing. For importers and channel operators, the most direct trading signal in Norwegian king crab right now is not the recovery in production, but that after female crab volumes increased, prices still stand at a high level.
