Russia's most important pollock fishing season of the year, the "A Season," has ended. The latest data show that the total pollock catch in the Far East fishery basin this season reached 1.021 million tonnes. Although this figure is 3.5% lower than the record level in 2025, it is still 6% above the average of the past five years, and the production base for this core commercial fish species in Russia remains solid.

The Sea of Okhotsk remained the main battleground this season. Alexey Buglak, chairman of the Russian Pollock Catchers Association, said that the three major zones of the Sea of Okhotsk caught a total of 761,000 tonnes of pollock this season, completing about 75% of the allowable catch quota, down 10% from the previous year. Weather was one of the main disruptive factors. This season, the fleet encountered stormy weather for more than 12% of the time, compared with less than 7.5% the previous year, significantly compressing effective operating time at sea.

Although output in the main Sea of Okhotsk production area declined, increases in other sea areas were relatively obvious. The pollock catch in the West Sakhalin zone was about 20,000 tonnes, 2.6 times higher year on year; output in the West Bering Sea area rose to 66,200 tonnes, double the previous year; and output in the Petropavlovsk-Komandorsky zone reached 54,500 tonnes, up 27% year on year. The increased volumes from several peripheral sea areas offset part of the losses caused by weather in the main production area.

The scale of operations this season remained high. A total of 98 fishing vessels participated in pollock operations, including 70 large processing trawlers. Scientific monitoring was also carried out simultaneously, with 16 observers from research institutions participating in on-site monitoring during operations. In addition to pollock, herring fishing in the northern subarea of the Sea of Okhotsk also performed strongly, with cumulative catches this season reaching 174,000 tonnes.

Regional data also showed growth momentum. Fishery production in Khabarovsk Krai accelerated noticeably this year. As of April 14, 2026, the region's total catch was close to 184,000 tonnes, up 8.3% year on year. Among this, pollock output was close to 139,000 tonnes, up 18.9% year on year. Pacific herring output in the North Okhotsk subarea reached 30,200 tonnes, while catches of true cod (Pacific cod) and flounder in the East Kamchatka and Sea of Okhotsk waters totaled 56,700 tonnes. Crab and shrimp fishing was also progressing, with combined output in the East Kamchatka and West Sakhalin waters at 3,500 tonnes.

The next focus is the B Season. According to the arrangement, Russia's pollock B Season will run from October 15 to December 31, and the industry plans to complete the remaining 230,000 to 240,000 tonnes of quota in the Sea of Okhotsk. Summer operations on the West Kamchatka shelf may also add 20,000 to 30,000 tonnes of output.

Pollock currently still accounts for more than 40% of Russia's national catch. In 2025, Russia's total pollock production exceeded 2 million tonnes for the first time, approaching 2.2 million tonnes. After the end of the 2026 A Season, the remaining quota has been left for the autumn window.
