Yamal catches about 7,000 tonnes in first three quarters, full-year target no less than 10,000 tonnes

Russia's Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug harvested about 7,000 tonnes of aquatic biological resources in the first nine months of 2026, on par with the previous year; four backbone enterprises contributed 5.36 thousand tonnes of the 53.6 thousand tonnes, up nearly 25% year on year, and the region plans to complete no less than 10,000 tonnes for the full year.

Russia's Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug harvested about 7,000 tonnes of aquatic biological resources in the first nine months of 2026, comparable to the level of the same period last year. The okrug government's press service told Fishnews that by the end of 2026, the region plans to complete a catch of no less than 10,000 tonnes.

According to okrug government data, the Yamal fisheries complex consists of 86 fishing enterprises and 15 processing enterprises, providing about 2,000 jobs, with workers mainly from local indigenous minorities. Processing within the region absorbs more than 50% of the raw material, and Yamal finished products include canned goods, salted fish, smoked fish and dried fish, with more than 220 categories.

Growth is being driven by several systemic backbone enterprises in the region, including the Aksarkov fisheries production and processing enterprise, Svyataya Gora company, and the Gorkovsky fish processing plant. These leading enterprises together account for more than three quarters of the region's catch, harvesting 5.36 thousand tonnes from January to September, up nearly 25% from the same period in 2025.

By production area, the Priuralsky district ranked first with 1.9 thousand tonnes, up 27.1% year on year; the Provsky district ranked second with 826 tonnes, up 28.5%; and the Nadym district ranked third with 312 tonnes, up 19.9%.

The catch structure is dominated by cyprinid fish: pike 2.3 thousand tonnes, ide 1.6 thousand tonnes, and the whitefish species humpback whitefish 633 tonnes. Some species multiplied, with bream catches rising from 19.5 tonnes to 81.9 tonnes, an increase of more than fourfold; catches of ide and cucumber fish also rose.

The summer-autumn fishing season has ended, and the okrug's fishermen are wrapping up open-water operations and preparing nets and machinery for winter under-ice fishing. The 2026 target is no less than 10,000 tonnes of aquatic biological resources, a level the region has maintained for five consecutive years.
