Buyers who still treat Alaska pollock (狭鳕) as a "low-priced whitefish" will need to reassess this line this year. In early April, Russian 25+ frozen H&G CFR China transactions had already climbed to USD 2,250–2,300/tonne. A few weeks ago, the open market was still discussing a high of about USD 1,925/tonne; by April, supply below USD 2,300/tonne was becoming increasingly hard to find. The A season is nearing its end, and what is tightest in the market is not sentiment but spot supply.
This price increase has not stopped at the raw material end. Europe's whitefish chain has been pulled up along its entire length. In 2025, Russia became the EU's largest supplier of frozen Alaska pollock fillets, exporting 126,100 tonnes to the EU worth EUR 313.9 million; if the EU and UK are combined, in the first 10 months of 2025 Europe imported 240,900 tonnes of frozen Alaska pollock fillets, of which Russia accounted for 43.4%, the US 36.0%, and China 20.5%. What Europe faces now is no longer "whether to buy Alaska pollock" but "by what route to get the goods."
The US side has also left no obvious room for the market to cool. NOAA's published 2025–2026 harvest specifications show that the 2026 Alaska pollock TAC for the Bering Sea–Aleutian Islands remains 1.38 million tonnes. The volume has not collapsed, yet the market is not loose. On the other hand, the USDA has launched procurement of up to USD 50 million of Alaska pollock for nutrition assistance programs. Commercial consumption is still there, and institutional procurement is there too, so prices are naturally harder to push down.
China is not just a processor in this chain. China remains one of the world's largest aquatic product consumption and import markets, with strong demand for wild seafood and convenience aquatic foods; in the first 11 months of 2025, Russia exported 514,000 tonnes of frozen Alaska pollock to China, worth USD 670 million. Surimi products such as hot pot items, oden, fish balls, crab sticks, and fish tofu have pulled Alaska pollock from the processing workshop into catering and retail terminals. Promotional materials for Alaska seafood in the Chinese market also mention that Alaska pollock surimi has become one of the preferred raw materials for high-end hot pot restaurants.
For many years, global Alaska pollock largely followed the path of "Russian and US supply, Chinese processing, European and American consumption." Now that path has been broken apart: Russia ships first-frozen fillets directly to Europe, China's second-frozen products are squeezed by high raw material costs, Vietnam has begun to take on part of the processing, and Eastern Europe has taken a share of the functionality in the breaded and fast-food chains. Alaska pollock is no longer just "cheap whitefish" but the pricing anchor most worth revisiting in this year's global whitefish trade.
The "Global Alaska Pollock Industry Development Report (2026)" breaks down in detail the product's price timeline, Russian and US supply, European flows, and China's processing and consumption chain, and provides an in-depth analysis of the value trend of the Alaska pollock market.
