Week 21 | Peruvian squid volume surge pressures market, prices continue to fall!

In Week 21 of 2025 (May 16 to May 22), China's distant-water squid market overall continued a divergent pattern: Southeast Pacific (Peruvian) squid prices continued to decline, Southwest Atlantic (Argentine) squid (offshore) prices remained stable at high levels, and some Indian Ocean squid size quotes showed notable increases.

Southeast Pacific squid prices continued to fall, Peruvian volume surge the main cause

According to data from the Zhejiang Zhoushan International Agricultural Products Trade Center, the average settlement price of Southeast Pacific squid in Week 21 was about 24,220 yuan/ton, continuing the downward trend. Among them, medium and large whole tubes and slices fell by more than 1,000 yuan/ton; extra-small, small whole tubes, large heads, tubes, squid necks and other categories also saw declines ranging from 100 to 600 yuan/ton. Only a few varieties such as tail fins, tail tips, and squid beaks saw settlement prices rise.

Total transaction volume for the week was 4,980 tons, down from the previous week. Trading was concentrated in the two major categories of whole tubes and slices: extra-small whole tubes and small whole tubes combined traded 2,356 tons, slices 1,180 tons, and tail fins and large heads traded 540 tons and 451 tons respectively.

From the quote trend, apart from small whole tubes being cut by 800 yuan/ton, other product quotes remained stable. However, with more domestic distant-water vessels returning to port and Peruvian squid export prices continuing to fall, spot supply continued to pressure price movements.

Particularly noteworthy is that the Peruvian government in mid-May raised the original squid quota of 190,000 tons to 290,000 tons and extended the fishing period to August 31. According to feedback from Peruvian companies, current operations mainly target small and medium-sized squid, and most are exported to China as whole fish, posing a clear impact on prices.

Southwest Atlantic squid (offshore) prices stable to firm

Southwest Atlantic squid (offshore) continued to show strength, with 857 tons traded in Week 21, all 200-600g medium-to-large sizes, at an average settlement price of 37,054 yuan/ton, maintaining a high level for the year.

In terms of comprehensive quotes, only 400-600g and 600g+ sizes were slightly reduced by 500 yuan/ton, while other sizes remained stable. Argentine data shows that as of early May, squid landings had exceeded 150,000 tons, close to a record level, supporting firm prices. China's distant-water fishing fleet also maintained good performance, with large trawlers averaging 1,500 tons per vessel and small trawlers about 850 tons.

Indian Ocean small-size squid prices rose sharply

This week the Zhejiang Agricultural Center had no Indian Ocean squid transaction records, but comprehensive quotes showed that small-size product prices rose notably. Among them, quotes for sizes under 100g rose 3,000 yuan/ton, and 100-300g products rose 1,750 yuan/ton. In contrast, 500-1000g medium sizes fell 500 yuan/ton, while large sizes remained stable. Supply-demand mismatch and tight resources in the production area were the main reasons driving small-size products higher.

Northwest Pacific squid quotes remained stable

There were no actual transactions for Northwest Pacific squid, but quotes for all sizes continued at the previous week's levels, with prices relatively stable.

Customs entry data and market dynamics

The volume of distant-water self-caught squid entering customs at Zhoushan port this week fell week-on-week for the third consecutive week. Market wait-and-see sentiment intensified, and processing plants became more cautious in raw material procurement.

Market observers noted that Southeast Pacific squid is under downward pressure from both lower import prices and the return of domestic spot supply, Southwest Atlantic squid is supported by its size advantage, and small and medium-sized Indian Ocean squid are strengthening in the short term due to demand. The global squid market is currently in a stage of rapid supply-demand structural adjustment, with obvious differences among production regions, and uncertainties such as international transport and trade policy will continue to affect market stability.
