Yakutia pilots annual catch quotas for traditional fishing, with 2027 standards set by ministerial order
On October 13, the Ministry of Ecology of the Republic of Yakutia signed Order No. 01-05/1-578, setting the 2027 annual catch standards for aquatic biological resources for indigenous peoples and their communities in the region, covering several species including whitefish (чир), broad whitefish (сиг), small whitefish species (ряпушка). The move is an implementation measure following the entry into force of amendments to Russia's federal traditional fishing regulations on September 1, 2026.
Yakutia (Sakha Republic) has set its 2027 traditional fishing catch standards for indigenous peoples and their communities. The annual catch standards are stipulated by Order No. 01-05/1-578 of October 13, 2026, of the Ministry of Ecology of the Sakha Republic (Yakutia), according to a Fishnews correspondent's report on October 16, 2026.
The species covered by the order include whitefish (чир), broad whitefish (сиг), small whitefish species (ряпушка) and other fish species.
The annual catch standards are a supporting arrangement following amendments to Russia's federal traditional fishing regulations. From September 1, 2026, federal-level legal amendments on the regulation of traditional fishing formally took effect: indigenous individuals no longer need to submit applications and can exercise their fishing rights based on information in the federal register. At the same time, traditional fishing organizations must adopt annual catch standards.
In September 2026, the Ministry of Ecology, Nature Management and Forestry of Yakutia approved the procedure for setting such indicators. The 2027 standards set by ministerial order were issued under the framework of that procedure.
