In the first quarter of 2025, Russia's exports of pollock surimi (surimi) to Thailand showed significant growth, with export volume reaching 499 tonnes, an increase of nearly 20-fold compared with the same period in 2024, and exceeding US exports to Thailand in the same period (326 tonnes). This change has given Russia a more prominent position among Thailand's surimi raw material supplier countries.

According to official trade data, Thailand imported a total of 15,493 tonnes of surimi raw materials (including surimi blocks and minced meat forms) in the first quarter of 2025, up 21% year on year. As a major importer of surimi raw materials and an important exporter of finished surimi in Southeast Asia, the Thai market is showing a trend of diversifying import sources.

The rapid growth of Russian surimi has attracted attention, especially as its export volume exceeded that of the United States for the first time. At the same time, the United States still maintains its important position as the main export destination for Thailand's surimi processed products. Despite US sanctions on Russian aquatic products, some Thai processing enterprises still tend to purchase US raw materials in order to maintain product exports to the US market.

In addition to imports, Thailand itself has also maintained stable performance in exports of surimi products. In the first quarter of 2025, Thailand exported 16,640 tonnes of processed surimi finished products, up 2% from the previous quarter, with an average FOB export price of 130 Thai baht/kg. Among these, the United States was the largest export market, with imports up 36% year on year to 2,170 tonnes.

However, exports of surimi raw materials and semi-finished products declined, especially in the Japanese market, where export volume fell 18% year on year to 3,416 tonnes. This shows differences in demand for various surimi products in the international market.

In addition, a number of international food companies, including South Korea's Dongwon (Dongwon Industries), have begun to promote a series of Korean-style street food products based on surimi in the Thai market. Their promotion methods include social media livestreams and star-participation tasting events, showing the growing trend of diversification and cultural integration of surimi products in the Thai market.
