Pakistan and Chinese Firms Jointly Invest $12 Million to Build Fishmeal Plant at Gwadar Port!

According to a report by Pakistan's official media on September 9, Pakistan's TECNO Group and China's MAYCOM Group will jointly invest $12 million to build a fishmeal processing plant at Gwadar Port in Balochistan. The agreement for the project was signed during Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's visit to China last week, when China and Pakistan signed a total of 21 agreements involving $4.2 billion in cooperation.

The new fishmeal plant will use fresh fish such as sardines from the Arabian Sea as raw material to produce feed-grade fishmeal and fish oil, mainly for export to the aquaculture market in southeastern China. According to a report by the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP), TECNO will hold a controlling stake and be responsible for local fish procurement and production; China's MAYCOM Group will provide technology and lead sales. The project will be implemented in two phases, with first-phase investment of $4 million and production capacity expected to reach 15,000 tonnes.

The construction of the fishmeal processing plant is of great significance to Pakistan. Fishmeal and fish oil are feed ingredients with very high protein content, widely used in poultry feed and aquaculture. Gwadar Port is located at the outlet of the Arabian Sea and is an important node of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. This project will not only drive local fisheries development but also help enhance export capacity.

According to government data, Pakistan's fisheries generated $465 million in revenue in fiscal year 2024-25, with China as the largest buyer. In the new fiscal year, Pakistan has set a seafood export target of $600 million. Industry insiders believe that the implementation of this fishmeal project will help Pakistan achieve export expansion while promoting Gwadar's development into a regional aquatic product processing and export hub.

In addition to the fishmeal plant, TECNO and MAYCOM also signed a procurement agreement to export 10,000 tonnes of sesame seeds to China, and plan to expand exports of peanuts, cottonseed and mineral products in exchange for Chinese solar panels, energy storage systems and new energy products.

This series of cooperation demonstrates the deep ties between China and Pakistan in the fields of energy, agriculture and the marine economy, and also highlights the strategic position of Gwadar Port under the "Belt and Road" framework.
